Importance of Native and Local Seeds :- Many peopl

Importance of Native and Local Seeds :-
Many people say that native seed varieties don't have high yield.
Here are some of my observations while working on environment friendly organic farming practices. You can see the evidence of comparison between hybrid Okra and desi Okra in photographs. These are visual and physical measurement observations and benefits made at our field -
1. The hybrid Okra has only one shoot of stem whereas the desi variety has more than 4-5 shoots.
2. The desi Okra leaves are 5 times bigger than hybrids which means 5 times more carbon sequester.
3. Hybrid variety stays up to 5 months of its life span whereas the desi variety goes more than 6 months and some varieties have more than 8 months.
4. Hybrid gives high yield in his particular time period but In terms of yield in the whole life span of both varieties, desi gives more yields.
5. Similar economics for both varieties in comparative rates. Desi has very good taste in comparative hybrid varieties but consumers are addicted to hybrid varieties with looks only. The desi variety look is not familiar with most of the consumers and then they don't prefer to buy.
6. Desi varieties require less water and fertiliser management than a hybrid.
7. The desi seeds you can save for future generations and can be shared with other farmers while hybrid seeds are very expensive and make farm input cost high.
8. It is very obvious that the desi variety has more nutrition than the hybrid one.
9. We had heavy rain this year and comparatively less damage to the desi lady finger than the hybrid one. Desi lady finger variety is much more climate resilient than hybrid variety.
10. Desi lady finger variety provides much more soil nutrition to the soil as the plant is full with leaves and continuous regeneration process is going on.
All in all, by looking at climatic challenges, desi varieties can secure our food and nutrition. They can survive difficult climatic conditions and mitigate climate change by sequestering more carbon in biomass and in soil. At AGRO RANGERS, we are conserving local and native seeds varieties with the support of Nisarg Foundation and promoting among farmers.

We have completed 2 days unit attachment training

We have completed 2 days unit attachment training under RAWE program for agriculture students from D Y Patil College of Agriculture, Talegaon. 24 students participated in a 2 day program and six students completed their internship for 2 months at our training centre.

With the support from @farmersforforests and Nisar

With the support from @farmersforforests and Nisarg Foundation, @agrorangers are planting a biodiversity forest in 3 acres of land with the help of the local community. We received the 750 saplings and drip support from farmers for forest organization and 100 saplings from 14 Tress foundation. As our area is in a drought region, we are installing a water tank on site for drip irrigation with the support from Nisarg Foundation. We have planted more than 60 native varieties of total 850 plants which have covered 2 acres of land. The best part is we had a very good rain after the plantation. We will be planting more 400 saplings on the remaining 1 acre of land. We are very thankful to the Nisarg Foundation and Farmers for Forest organization for their support.

On the auspicious day of Dussehra, we have inaugur

On the auspicious day of Dussehra, we have inaugurated our newly opened regenerative organic training farming centre and office for farmers to educate about soil health. At AGRO RANGERS, we are working towards rejuvenating the soil health of farmland. We have set up a training centre space to train and provide solutions to the farmers in improving soil quality. It's our dream to have such an amazing space for farmers and our teams. We are thankful to all our donors, teammates, organizations and supporters for supporting us in this better cause of farmers.

@agrorangers have signed an MOU with the WASSAN organization to bring agro biodiversity back to production systems through native seed bank projects. We are sowing and documenting all native varieties in a scientific way. AGRO RANGERS have collected more than 63 types of indigenous native seeds biodiversity including cereals, pulses, millets, and vegetables from local seed keeping farmers from our dryland region and rainfed area. We are conserving these indigenous seeds which are climate resilient and very important to develop self sufficiency and ownership of the farmers over their seeds and its production. After the seed production at AGRO RANGERS farm, we will set up our native seed bank and will be distributing these seeds among other sustainable farmers with the best performing variety for promotion and conservation. We are very thankful to WASSAN for taking such important initiatives with us.

Three farmer focused social organisations, Indradhanush, AGRO RANGERS & Shekru, have come together with a quest to organise a series of festivals to increase awareness regarding benefits of millet consumption in our daily food bringing farmers, entrepreneurs, nutritionists and consumers together.
